Google Authenticator PAM module. Example PAM module demonstrating two-factor authentication for logging into servers via SSH, OpenVPN, etc This project is not about logging in to Google, Facebook, or other TOTP/HOTP second factor systems, even if they recommend using the Google Authenticator apps. Move Google Authenticator to a New Phone. First of all, don’t do anything to the copy of Google Authenticator on your old phone. Leave it be for now, or else you might get caught without a way to enter 2FA codes before the new phone is set up. The google-authenticator command will also generate a QR code that you can scan with your Android phone. Since we haven’t installed the app yet, for the time being just note down the 16-digit code. Open Google Authenticator on the other device, which should have your Google account already added. From a PC, go to the Google website for two-step verification with your account details. Go to the App section of the Authenticator and click on Settings. Select the type of device you want to use (Android or iPhone). Google Authenticator is a software-based authenticator by Google that implements two-step verification services using the Time-based One-time Password Algorithm (TOTP; specified in RFC 6238) and HMAC-based One-time Password algorithm (HOTP; specified in RFC 4226), for authenticating users of software applications.

Two-step verification is an important thing to enable on services like Gmail, Dropbox and more and more websites.

Agilebits recently added the ability to use their app 1Password, which many Mac users already use, to generate and store 2FA related passwords. TJ Luoma at MacStories wrote a detailed tutorial on switching to 1Password:

If you have been using Google Authenticator or Authy for two-step verification (“2FA” for short), you may have wondered whether you should switch to 1Password, now that it offers the same functionality. You may have wondered how much of a hassle it would be to change from one app to another, and if it would be worth it. If that describes you, well, then you’re in luck, because I just completed the switch and I’m here to report my results.
